An earthquake measuring 7.8 magnitude struck China today, killing an estimated 8500 people so far. Near the epicentre, as many as 5000 were killed and 10000 more injured in Beichuan county alone, the worst-hit area. It is reported that 80% of the buildings in Beichuan county have collapsed following the quake, raising fears the death toll there could be much higher.

The most tragic of news however, comes from nearby Dujiangyan city where 900 students are believed to be trapped underneath the rubble of what was once their highschool. 50 bodies have so far been recovered. Chinese military responded swiftly, deploying thousands of troops to the affected areas to carry out relief work with the police; while the Chinese Red Cross sent out tents and blankets for the victims. China is scheduled to play host to the 2008 Summer Olympics in just a matter of months.
